Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
