EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
